Finland announced the conclusion of a contract on military cooperation with the United States

According to the Minister of defence of Finland Jussi niinistö, quoted by Reuters, Finland expects this fall to conclude the contract on military cooperation with the United States.

According to Reuters, niinistö said that the framework agreement which is being negotiated against the background of growing in the Nordic countries the discontent of the Russian military activity in the region, not to contain obligations on military assistance, which would involve NATO membership.

“It [the agreement] will cover areas in which already work together, such as military training, information sharing and research” — said the Agency Minister.

Niinistö said that Finland wants to conclude a contract with US before November this year in the country will change the administration of the President.

“It’s one of the reasons why it should be done this fall. But I am confident that we will continue to work together with any one of the main candidates for the victory [in the presidential elections in the United States,” — said the head of the defense Ministry.

According to Reuters, during the cold war, Finland remained neutral, not joining any of the countries of the Warsaw Pact Union, or NATO; neither is joining other Western blocs such as the EU

The agreement on military cooperation with the United States earlier in June, was signed by Sweden, and its Parliament in may, has provided NATO with greater access to exercise in the country.

In early June of this year in Finland, which is not part of NATO, held a three-day exercises of the North Atlantic Alliance Baltops, which involved 6,1 thousand soldiers from 17 countries, 49 ships, 60 aircraft and three submarines. Then the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö said in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter that the country can not give up the opportunity to apply for NATO membership because it is an instrument of security policy”. However, he stressed that the question of Finland’s accession to the Alliance should be put to a national referendum.

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin, commenting on the statement by the head of Finland, made it clear that, in the case of Finland’s accession to NATO, the situation will change. “Imagine that Finland will join NATO. This means that Finnish troops will not be sovereign. They will become part of the military infrastructure of NATO, which will be on the borders of the Russian Federation. Do you think we will continue to act? Fifteen hundred troops withdrew and just leave it?” — said Putin.
