The Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier is in favour of the return of Russia in the G8, but believes that this is possible only after substantial progress in the situation in the Donbass and Syria. The head of the foreign Ministry, said in an interview RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland.
“The key to the return of the format of G-8 is in Moscow”, — said the Minister. According to him, the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine demonstrate that Russia can not be excluded “from the close cooperation of the largest economies in the world.”
“When, finally, there is substantial progress on the situation in Eastern Ukraine and negotiating a ceasefire in Syria, partners поG7, of course, ready to talk with Moscow”, — said Steinmeier.
After the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia ceased to participate in the meetings of the “big eight”. Then the summit was to be held in Sochi, but in the end the leaders of “seven” held a meeting in Brussels. In 2015 the leaders of Germany, France, great Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States held a summit in Bavaria in 2016 — Japanese Hiroshima.
