The foreign Minister of Luxembourg proposed to exclude Hungary from the EU

In an interview with the newspaper Die Welt, foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn said that he supported the exclusion of Hungary from the EU. “We cannot accept the mass violation of the system of fundamental values of the European Union”, — said the politician.

Asselborn explained his position that the Hungarian authorities are building fences on the border in the effort to stem the flow of fleeing war refugees, violate the freedom of speech and justice.

“Temporarily, and possibly final exception is the only way to preserve the integrity of the EU,” the politician said. According to him, the EU would never accept Hungary as a member.

Article 7 of the Lisbon Treaty allows to suspend the privilege of participating countries of the EU arising from its membership in the Union. However, such hard decision requires a unanimous decision of the European Council (with the exception of the country against which the mechanism decides to use). More flexible and effective ways to influence the offender from the European Union no.
