The EU does not recognize the Russian parliamentary elections in the Crimea, said the representative of the head of European diplomacy Federica Mogherini. “The European Union does not recognize illegal annexation by the Russian Federation of the Crimea and Sevastopol, and therefore does not recognize the elections in the Crimean Peninsula”, — underlined in the message.
In addition, the representative Mogherini noted that the observation mission of the OSCE ODIHR (Office for democratic institutions and human rights) and diplomats of the countries-members of the Union participated in monitoring the elections in Crimea and Sevastopol.
“Support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine with the European Union remains unchanged,” he concluded.
The representative Mogherini also mentioned the preliminary report of OSCE / ODIHR on the elections to the state Duma. In it, in particular, it was stated that local authorities “were seen in the abuse of administrative resources” and “not always related to rivals an open mind”; it also noted “numerous procedural irregularities” in the counting of votes, restrictions on fundamental freedoms and political rights, tight control over the media and pressure on civil society. In this regard, the representative of the head of European diplomacy called on the Russian authorities “to do everything possible to take action in response to the concern, based on the recommendations of ODIHR.
Moscow reacted to the provisions of the preliminary report of the OSCE with a grain of salt. In particular, commented on the report of Ambassador for special assignments of the Russian foreign Ministry Mikhail Nesterenko. “Today I was surprised to hear that there were some limitations admitted, was somehow poorly organized campaign coverage of political parties’ positions who participated in the vote. I believe that this is not true, it’s not fair,” he said.
On September 17, the state Department issued a statement which stressed that the United States considers illegitimate elections in the state Duma, which will be held on the territory of Crimea and does not recognize their results. “Our position on Crimea is clear: the Peninsula remains an integral part of Ukraine. Anti-Russian sanctions in connection with accession of the Crimea, will not be lifted until Russia will regain control over the region to Ukraine”, —stated in the message.
On Monday, the Ukrainian party “national front” was registered in the Verkhovna Rada a draft resolution on non-recognition of the elections to the state Duma due to the fact that voting took place in Crimea. The leader of the party Arseniy Yatsenyuk called on all factions to support this resolution.
