After negotiations, the head of Rosselkhoznadzor Sergey Dankvert and the delegation of the Arab Republic of Egypt made the decision to resume imports of Egyptian agricultural products to Russia. This is stated in the message on the Agency’s website.
“At the end of the meeting the parties came to an agreement for the resumption of supply of plant products from Egypt to Russia, with the exception of potatoes, subject to the Egyptian side of all requirements of the Russian Federation to ensure that phytosanitary clean parties”, — stated in the message Department.
As reported by the official representative of the Minister Yulia Melano, during today’s meeting the representatives of the Egyptian delegation presented the measures to be taken to ensure security of supply of products from Egypt. “Russia resumes imports of all fruits and vegetables from Egypt, with the exception of potatoes,” — said in a few words. According to her, the issue of resumption of the supply of this vegetable will be dealt with separately, during the visit of the Rosselkhoznadzor specialists in Egypt. The visit is tentatively scheduled in October-November this year, added a few words.
In addition, the negotiators agreed that a Russian delegation of experts will visit Egypt in October-November 2016 to assess the effectiveness of the measures taken in compliance with the Russian phytosanitary requirements in the supply of Egyptian potatoes. The results of this visit will be a revised Protocol for the export of potatoes from Egypt to Russia.
Following the meeting, its participants signed the Protocol of negotiations, which reflected key aspects of the agreements.
The talks took place after September 23, Egypt announced the resumption of imports of Russian wheat, which was suspended in August due to ergot — fungus-parasite. The head of the Ministry then suggested that soon Russia may lift ban on vegetable products from Egypt.
The Russian side imposed a ban on delivery of fruits and vegetables from Egypt on 19 September. The prohibition applies to citrus, tomatoes and potatoes. The Rosselkhoznadzor said that in Egyptian fruits and vegetables repeatedly found dangerous pests such as Californian thrips, potato moth and Mediterranean fruit fly. Since the beginning of this year, said the office had identified 47 cases of delivery of contaminated products from Egypt.
Egypt is the largest supplier of potatoes to Russia with a share of 44.4 and 33.6% in monetary terms. According to the statistics of the FCS in total for the first six months from Egypt, Russia imported vegetables and fruits for $497,3 million.
