Washington refused to recognize the ban of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars in Russia

The United States refused to recognize the decision of the Russian Supreme court to ban the activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars in Russia as an extremist organization. This is stated in a special statement, the state Department spokesman, Mark Toner, was published on the Agency’s website.

“The US does not recognize the legitimacy of the decision of the Supreme Court to prohibit local self-government bodies of Crimean Tatars — the Majlis. We reject the characterization of the Majlis as an organization “extremists” and condemn the termination of this democratic institution,” the document says.

The state Department also said that “Russia continues its practice of arbitrary arrests of Crimean Tatars, kidnapping, politically motivated prosecutions, restrictions of freedom of movement and the police raids on their homes and mosques.” “We call on Russia to immediately stop these unacceptable practices,” — said the representative of the state Department.

Toner also said that the US does not recognize the annexation of Crimea to Russia. “Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in force as long as Moscow does not return control of Crimea to Ukraine”, — summed up the Toner.
