The plans do not include capture of the Syrian city of Aleppo for the Syrian government. This was stated by foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov in interview to TV channel CNN. Full text of the interview published on the website of the Russian foreign Ministry.
Responding to the suggestion of the leader of what Russia is seeking a military solution to the Syrian conflict, and, in particular, wants to capture Aleppo, to the city left Assad in recent days, the administration of Barack Obama, Lavrov said, “No.”
“In Aleppo, we had a strong support to the initiative of the special envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria, Stephan de Mistura. He proposed to give the opportunity to “Dzhabhat EN-Nusra” [organization recognized in Russia is prohibited] to leave Eastern Aleppo with weapons, and, as he said, with dignity, despite UN security Council resolutions and prohibitions against transactions with terrorists,” Lavrov recalled.
In parallel, the moderate opposition, which will remain in Aleppo, would be asked to sign an agreement with the government about the ceasefire. These initiatives support the proposal by de Mistura, was contained in the Russian draft resolution, which was rejected in the UN security Council when rejected the French draft resolution.
Despite the block in the UN security Council of the Russian resolution, set initiatives de Mistura, Lavrov believes that they should be given a chance. “We are working on its promotion with people “on the ground”. I hope that there will soon be developments in this matter. Not dividing the terrorists and driving them <…> Let’s send them in Idlib, the capital of “Dzhabhat EN-Nusra.” It will be easier for all of us joint forces is to deal with these groups. Otherwise, I don’t think we can expect from the Syrian army to cease fighting “Jabhat EN-Nusra”, which is covered by the civilian population as a shield,” – said Lavrov.
He added that Russia will recommend the Syrian army to be “very specific and purposeful” in their actions against the “Dzhabhat EN-Nusra”, as “tolerated” to this group is impossible. “We really don’t want to believe it, but we think that our partners in the middle East, USA and Europe want to spare “Dzhabhat EN-Nusra”, – concluded the Minister.
