Putin appointed Mutko Deputy Prime Minister


The President of Russia Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Vitaly Mutko, Deputy Prime Minister, reported on the Kremlin website. On a new post Mutko will be responsible for sports, tourism and youth policy.

“The present decree comes into force from the day of its signing”, — the document says. Putin also signed a decree appointing Minister of sport Pavel Kolobkov.

In connection with the appointment Mutko, the President also signed a decree on increasing the number of Deputy Prime Ministers from eight to nine.

Earlier on Wednesday it became known that Putin had approved the candidacy of Mutko in the post by the proposal of the head of the government Dmitry Medvedev.

Putin proposed to assign a Deputy Prime Minister supervising of sport, tourism and youth policy of the 11 October meeting of the Council for physical culture and sport.

Then the newspaper “Soviet sport” reported, citing a source in the government about the possible elimination of the MST. The publication claims that instead it may be a new Federal Agency that will oversee issues that are now engaged in the Ministry of sports, tourism and youth. According to sources, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of these issues could be Mutko.

Before this sport was supervised by Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, tourism and youth policy said Olga Golodets.

Mutko also holds the post of President of the Russian football Union. He won the election in September.

The name Vitaly Mutko mentioned in connection with the report of the independent Commission WADA about doping in Russian sports. From this it followed that during the Olympic games in Sochi samples of Russian athletes many times replaced, and the intake of illicit drugs was maintained at the state level. The head of the Commission Richard McLaren claimed that the Minister of sport Vitaly Mutko was aware of what was happening, and demanded his resignation.

After the report Putin ordered to dismiss anyone who is named in the document as a direct executor. Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov said that Mutko punishment is not touched, as it was not mentioned in the report as a performer.

Speaking of doping, the Russian President said that this sphere is politicized, and the attitude to the Russian athletes in advance biased. The Council for development of physical culture and sports, he drew attention to the “private” use of drugs to hundreds of athletes.
