Michael McFaul said that Russian President Vladimir Putin changed the strategy, as they realized that Donald trump will lose the presidential election in the United States.
“Russian did not go, because Putin is not stupid. He understands that trump lost. Now they are retreating. Clever,” he wrote on Twitter.
On the eve of the Wikileaks McFaul called Russia’s “foreign agent”. He said that it is time to stop to refer to the website as a news resource. “Can people cease to refer to WikiLeaks as a news organization? They are — foreign agents, supported by Russia and publishing stolen data,” said the former US Ambassador to Russia.
Replica McFaul on Twitter have responded representatives of the website. They stated that WikiLeaks is an independent media institution that is fully funded by its readers and revenues from the sale of films and books.
Later, McFaul also said that many people do not advocate public criticism of WikiLeaks for fear of leakage of their personal data.
U.S. officials have repeatedly accused Russia of involvement in the cyber attacks on the websites of American political parties and organizations.
During the third presidential debate, the candidate in US presidents from Democratic party Hillary Clinton said that the Russian government is engaged in espionage against the US, hacking sites and mailboxes of U.S. citizens and then sends the data to WikiLeaks.
The next day on the portal WikiLeaks was first published electronic messages that were sent and received by the current U.S. President Barack Obama from one of the strategists of the Democratic party of the United States John Podestà, and on Saturday, October 22, WikiLeaks has appeared correspondence between the Podestà and the head of the election headquarters of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
The United States presidential election will be held on 8 November.
