Spain’s decision to allow the Russian avanessa heavy cruiser “Admiral Kuznetsov” and the group of Russian ships, which move to Aleppo, Syria, will be refuelled in the port of Ceuta, condemned some European politicians, writes Politico.
“It is outrageous that Spain as a member of NATO and the EU allows the Russian Navy to refuel and obtain maintenance on its territory”, — quotes the edition statement lavy of the Alliance of liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament, former Prime Minister of Belgium, guy Verhofstadt, which he posted in Facebook. “Just last week, the Spanish government signed the statement of the European Council, accusing Russia of committing war crimes against civilians in Aleppo, and help the fleet, which has only one goal — the destruction of Aleppo and hostile actions towards the EU and NATO,” said Verhofstadt.
Former British defence Secretary Gerald Howarth, in turn, called “totally inappropriate” to permit Spain to enter the Russian ships in the port, the newspaper reminds.
Earlier Tuesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed concern that the Russian ships could be used against the civilian population of Aleppo.
As Politico writes, it is expected that refueling will occur on Wednesday. As noted by the Telegraph, Spain often allows you to refuel Russian ships in this port, as it is not covered by the NATO treaties.
The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Spain stated that the request for the refueling of the Russian fleet in Ceuta is under consideration because of concerns NATO, that Russian warships could be used for attacks on civilians, according to Reuters. The Minister of defence of Spain Pedro morenes at the meeting with the defence Ministers of the EU countries stressed that the government will require clarification from Russia on “the purpose and destination of the ships,” writes Holaciudad.
21 Oct aircraft-carrying cruiser “Admiral Kuznetsov” together with a group of Russian warships passed through the English channel.
“Admiral Kuznetsov” in the ship group went to the Mediterranean sea, 15 Oct. The defense Ministry then stated that the aim of the campaign is “providing a naval presence in the operationally important areas of the World ocean”.
