Russia is not re-elected to the UN Council on human rights (UNHRC), according to Reuters.
During the voting Russia lost to Croatia and Hungary during the vote of the 193 members of the UN General Assembly. Hungary received 144 votes, Croatia – 114, and Russia – 112.
Russia has applied for re-election to the Council from the group of Eastern European States. Russia’s membership in the Council expires at the end of 2016. To be elected to the UNHRC is up to each country to no more than two times in a row.
The head of the HRC Mikhail Fedotov expressed his regret that Russia has not won a seat in the Council. He also noted that “it is irrelevant to the question of the status of human rights in the country and is exclusively concerned with international relations.”
“This is not a team of the world on human rights, is not a collection of countries with the highest ratings for the respect for human rights. This international Institute, which is designed on the lines of the United Nations to deal with the adoption of the universal nature of human rights in the world, — said Fedotov. Something that we have not received the required number of votes, it’s a shame, of course, but it’s not a disaster” (quoted by “RIA Novosti”).
25 October it became known that representatives of human rights and humanitarian organizations created a petition in which he demanded to prevent the election of Russia to the UN human rights Council. The paper noted that Russia’s veto as a permanent member of the UN security Council on a resolution demanding a cease-fire in Aleppo and its support of air strikes on the city do not conform to the principles and objectives of the HRC. This is a petition signed by over 80 organizations, among them are Human Rights Watch and Care International.
The petition said the press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov, advised defenders to more actively oppose the terrorists in Syria. “We would be more impressed if these organizations were more active against the background of those atrocities, which have for several years satisfied militants in Syria-the terrorists,” — said Peskov.
