Window of opportunity: what Russian politicians expect from trump

Gennady Zyuganov, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist party:

“He [trump] won deservedly, with regard to enthusiasm associated with the new deal in America, I have this point of view is not shared. Changed presidents, but their strategy is to subjugate all that is beneficial, has not changed. He will be the servant class and their state. Regarding tactics, I do not exclude that it can be changed. Trump expressed a lot of encouraging ideas related to the dialogue with Russia, for example, their attitude to the Crimea. First and foremost we need to be smart, and our situation will get better” ().

Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the state Duma:

“I want to believe that with the new President of the United States possible a more constructive dialogue between Russia and the United States. Any steps in this direction by the Russian Parliament will welcome and support” (“RIA Novosti”).

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Federation Council Committee on international Affairs:

“I suspect it will not be wrong in his election forecast to overestimate America Donald trump is clearly not to be. Yes, there is a window of opportunity. But a window opened eight years ago, when Obama’s victory. It is for new hope to him then hastily, for the support of the sentiment, was awarded the Nobel prize. And we know how it ended” (Facebook).

Frants Klintsevich, first Deputy head of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security:

“Today there is a real possibility of America being the number one country — like it or not, but it’s true — to go from militant rhetoric to the rhetoric of compromise. America just will get from this. But acquiring and Russia, will gain the whole world. I think this may be the most important outcome of these elections” (Interfax).

Sergei Zheleznyak, a member of the international Affairs Committee of the state Duma:

“We respect the choice of Americans and hope for development of constructive relations with the new US administration on the basis of equal dialogue and cooperation, < … > and the end of the election campaign showed irritation of the Americans ‘aggressiveness and ineffective policies of the previous administration in Washington, which made Americans hostages to their misguided and destructive actions” (TASS).

Leonid Slutsky, the head of the Duma Committee on international Affairs:

“Remember his [trump’s] rhetoric. He said that Russia needs to build a constructive relationship. History, including the newest, is replete with examples when pre-election rhetoric of the victorious candidate has varied in the destructive side against Russia. And we can assume that trump is just playing with various electoral groups, which did not agree with the harsh rhetoric of Mrs. Clinton. It is hoped that the positive expression of trump in relation to cooperation with Russia, the Eurasian integration structures will be realistic in case of his victory” (the Agency “Moscow”).

Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Duma Committee on education and science:

“Trump spoke from a position of isolationism. He advocated that America should deal with its internal Affairs, and not to challenge the entire world. This means that we have a good opportunity to defuse tensions in relations with the United States” (TASS).
