Azerbaijan imposed penalties for insulting the President on the Internet


The attempt to discredit or humiliate the honor and dignity of the President of Azerbaijan began a criminal offense. This decision was taken by Parliament upon the proposal of the Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov, according to the publication Vesti.az.

Earlier, the Azerbaijani legislation provides punishment for insult of the President in the media. Now, in the article and added the term “online media”. Those violating the law will be fined in the amount of 500-1000 AZN (19-37 thousand rubles), or correctional labor up to two years, or deprivation of liberty for a term of two years.

Even more serious is the punishment for those who will be involved in the dissemination of insults against the President in the “information resources” using fake names, profiles, or accounts. They will be punished with a fine in the amount of 1000-1500 AZN (37-58 thousand roubles) or deprivation of liberty for a term up to three years.

The deputies also passed a law that introduces criminal liability for libel on the Internet using fake names. As explained by the attorney General, we are talking about the messages where it is impossible to establish the identity of the user.

On 14 November, the organization Freedom House included Azerbaijan in the list of countries with partly free Internet. Russia in this rating were in the group of countries with not free Internet.
