Juncker criticized the suspension of negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker spoke out against the suspension of the agreement on the accession of Turkey to the EU. The opinion he expressed in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

According to him, it is very important to maintain a dialogue with Turkey. “We must work to ensure that Turkey was moving in the direction of the European Union, instead of doing giant steps back,” said Juncker.

European Commission President also stated that “if Turkey is not ready to fully comply with the conditions for easing the visa regime and, consequently, to change anti-terrorism legislation, it is the fault solely of the Turkish government and the Turkish President [Recep Tayyip Erdogan] that their citizens still cannot freely enter the EU”. Juncker explained that this position you need to convey to the Turkish people.

The European Parliament called for the suspension of negotiations on the Association agreement of Turkey with the European Union in late November. Its decision in the EU explained “disproportionate” reaction of the Turkish authorities failed military coup attempt in July of this year. “The European Parliament <…> strongly condemns the disproportionate repressive measures taken by Turkey in connection with the failed coup attempt”, — stated in the text of the resolution.
