The attack on Andrew Charles happened earlier in the evening at the center for contemporary art, when he opened a photo exhibition “Russia through the eyes of a traveler: from Kaliningrad to Kamchatka.” The Ambassador gave a speech from the podium, when the offender opened fire in the air, and then shot Charles in the back.
Judging by the published photos, the assailant was dressed in a suit and stood behind Charles. According to Hurriyet, he managed to enter the building of the centre for contemporary art, presenting police identification card. However, Reuters, citing a source in the security service of Turkey reported that the perpetrator was a policeman in Ankara, however, he was not in the performance of their duties.
