Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov commented on the plans of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who earlier announced the start of his election campaign, to participate in the presidential elections in 2018.
“The Constitution stipulates a list of criteria that must be met for the citizens of Russia to run for President. Means, respectively, any citizen of the Russian Federation, if it meets these criteria, can be nominated — it’s his right to run for President,” — said Peskov (quoted by “RIA Novosti”).
On the eve of 21 Dec, the right Navalny to participate in the presidential elections questioned the speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.
Navalny announced his intention to participate in presidential elections on 13 December. The main objective of his election campaign, he still calls the registration as a candidate. The participation of Navalny in the elections became possible after the Supreme court, following the decision of the ECHR, sent the materials on the “case “Kirovec” for a new trial.
16 Dec Bloomberg with reference to sources wrote that the announcement of Navalny to participate in elections became a topic of discussion in the Kremlin. According to the interlocutor of the Agency, the participation of opposition can contribute to the legitimization of the election results. 20 Dec the TV channel “Rain” with reference to sources reported that the participation of Navalny in the elections, the Kremlin considered harmful.
