U.S. authorities have transferred to the UAE last Russians from Guantanamo Bay

The US government gave to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) three prisoners from the prison at the military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, including Russian citizen Ravil Mingazova. A statement published on the official website of the Ministry of defense.

In addition to Mingazova, UAE was handed over to Afghan businessman Haji Wali Mohammed and Yemeni citizen Mohamed yassim.

“The United States is grateful to the government of the UAE for its humanitarian gesture. USA agreed with the government that the transfer will be carried out with reliable protection and humane treatment”, — stated in the message of the Pentagon.

The US government decided to release Mingazova in July last year. He was held in prison on military base of Guantanamo Bay for 14 years without filing formal charges. However, the American authorities believed that Mingazov fought in Afghanistan against the Northern Alliance on the side of the Taliban (recognized in Russia as terrorist and banned). The Pentagon also believed that Mingazova could be connected with extremist group in Uzbekistan, which is associated with “al-Qaeda” (banned in Russia). The Russian was arrested in a hideout in Pakistan.

Mingazov himself denied any involvement in terrorist activities.
