Why trump chose the “hard” candidate for Ambassador to Russia

To claim in 2012 for the U.S. presidency, Republican John huntsman has agreed to be the new us Ambassador to Russia, told NBC News, AP and CNN, citing sources in the White house. Information on the agreement Huntsman confirmed and familiar with it source .

Official statements from the office of the President of the United States Donald trump and Huntsman is not followed.

The huntsman is currently head of the expert-analytical center Atlantic Council. He has diplomatic experience: in 1992, President George H. W. Bush appointed Huntsman Ambassador to Singapore. According to the National governors Association, a 32-year-old huntsman became the youngest U.S. Ambassador for the last hundred years. In 2004, with a score of 58% huntsman was elected Governor of Utah in 2008 re-elected. However, as Governor he left in 2009 and took the post of Ambassador to China. In 2012, huntsman was one of the contenders for the nomination of presidential candidates from the Republican party, but withdrew his candidacy in favor of his distant cousin MITT Romney.

Previously the favourite for the post of successor to the current Ambassador John Tefft, the American mass-media named Thomas Graham. He was an adviser to former U.S. President George W. Bush on policy towards Russia. Now Graham is a managing Director at the consulting firm Kissinger Associates, former U.S. Secretary of state Henry Kissinger.

A convenient candidate

The representative of the USA Embassy in Russia told TASS that it had no official information about the possible appointment of Jon Huntsman as the new head of the diplomatic mission.

“The candidacy of U.S. Ambassador to Moscow, speaks volumes. The huntsman — the head of the Atlantic Council, where the norm was harsh criticism of Russia. Certainly not a dove” — described candidate Senator Alexei Pushkov in his Twitter. According to Pushkov, trump mostly surrounds himself with people who do not want to improve relations with Russia and expansion of cooperation against the “Islamic state” (banned in Russia organization), making it difficult to find common ground.

“We welcome any Chapter of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, which will be a staunch advocate of dialogue between the two countries. We believe that this is the main task of the job of any Ambassador in any country”, — commented on the appointment of Huntsman press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.

The situation around the appointment of Huntsman does not mean that trump has succumbed to anti-Russian sentiment, said the Director of the Moscow Carnegie center Dmitri Trenin. “The Huntsman as a former Governor and former presidential candidate has a stronger position and higher ranking in the eyes of trump and his administration than that of the same Volume, Graham”, he added. Graham now works for Kissinger, but has, according to Trenin, “diplomatic-bureaucratic-academic” background and at some point it is really recommended for the post of Ambassador to Russia. “The huntsman is closer in spirit to the administration of the tramp, which largely consists of businessmen,” — said Trenin.

For the appointment of Ambassador Huntsman’s candidacy must be approved by the U.S. Senate. “Huntsman is more acceptable to the senators figure than Graham, and trump more politically advantageous. His candidacy is embedded in the current conjuncture greater rigidity “in relations with Moscow,” — said the expert of the Russian Council on international Affairs Maxim Suchkov.
