The President of the United States Donald trump for the first time since taking office, met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Their meeting took place in Washington.
At the talks the sides discussed bilateral relations, prospects of vystraivanii relations with Russia and the situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan. Trump said that the United States remain committed to NATO.
“I reiterated to the Chancellor Merkel about his strong support of NATO, and our NATO allies to contribute their fair share for defense needs,” said trump at a press conference (quoted by Reuters).
The US President said that trade relations between Washington and Berlin is not “fantastically good”. Merkel expressed hope that the United States and the European Union can resume negotiations on a trade agreement. Trump said he did not believe in a policy of isolation, however, trade policies must be fair.
Touching on the theme of Russia during the talks, the sides noted that they are not against normalization of relations with Moscow, however, all parties to the conflict in Ukraine must observe Minsk agreements.
