MOSCOW, July 11. /TASS/. Government standards, that captures all qualitative characteristics of the precious stones weighing over one carat may appear in Russia. On Tuesday the newspaper “Izvestia” with reference to the head of the Moscow Gemological certification center (MHSC) in the assay chamber of Russia Alexander Dunenkova.

The publication notes that according to the Association “Guild of jewellers of Russia” annually retail sell jewelry in the amount of not less than 300 billion rubles, and about 40% of this amount falls on diamond jewelry. The most common type of fraud – overstating the certificate of indicators of color and purity of the stones. Such manipulation is most often done with a large (over one carat) and medium (from 0.30 to 0.99 carats) diamonds.

“Now, any Gemological laboratory may incorporate a rating system, – said Turenkov. And to issue certificates of quality stones, based on the accepted system. And since there is no single Standard which would be spelled out criteria for assessing the quality of diamonds, to prove and substantiate the fact of overestimate of characteristics almost impossible.”

He noted that the Association of jewelers of the Eurasian economic Union goes on a government level initiative to introduce licensing for the activities associated with the wholesale trade of precious stones.

According to “Izvestia”, now more than 40% of diamonds and products from them, are presented in jewelry stores do not meet the stated in the documents characteristics. More than 20% of small diamonds (weighing up to 0.29 carats), though marketed as natural, indeed artificial.
