Moscow. July 20. INTERFAX.RU – Russia and Iraq signed a contract to supply a large batch of Russian T-90 tanks for the Iraqi army, said the Russian presidential aide on military-technical cooperation Vladimir Kozhin.
“A decent contract for a big batch, the specific amount can not name the number of great,” – said Kozhin, who on Thursday was quoted by the newspaper “Izvestia”.
According to experts of the Center for analysis of strategies and technologies, the contract amount may exceed $1 billion, and the number of tanks – a few hundred. After the execution of the agreement, the Iraqi army will be equipped with both Russian and American tanks, the newspaper said.
According to “Izvestia”, serial modern Russian T-90 tank attracted the attention of the Ministry of defense of Iraq after the outbreak of hostilities in Syria and Iraq. The machine combines high mobility, firepower and relatively small size and weight. The tank is in service with the Russian army and the armed forces of Syria, Algeria, Azerbaijan and India.
The newspaper reminds that earlier about buying the T-90 was reported by the Ministry of defence of Iraq – it was about supplying more than 70 tanks. Thus, according to the newspaper, this is only the first batch of equipment, which others will follow. However, the Federal service for military-technical cooperation, where the “news” asked for comment, did not disclose details of the deal.
