Russia remains a leading partner of Central Asian States in the sphere of military and military-technical cooperation, which is particularly important given the continued instability in Afghanistan. This was stated by Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov published in “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” the article “Russia – Central Asia: partnership tested by time”, timed to 25-anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the States of the region.
“We note with satisfaction that our approaches to the main problems of regional and global agenda are identical or very similar, he said. – Russia is a leading partner of Central Asian States in the military and military-technical fields – support them in addressing the many challenges and threats to security, including terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime”.
According to the Russian Minister, the cooperation in these areas is developing both on a bilateral basis and within the CSTO, SCO and CIS. “Given the continuing instability in Afghanistan, the influx of ISIS militants (formerly the banned terrorist group “Islamic state” – approx. TASS) from Syria and Iraq (cooperation) expansion and upgrading are of particular importance,” – said Lavrov.
