Lavrov: the leaders of Russia and Saudi Arabia discussed the situation in Syria, Iraq and the Persian Gulf


MOSCOW, October 5. /TASS/. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the king of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdul Aziz al Saud discussed Thursday the situation in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, the situation in the Persian Gulf and the middle East.

This was announced by Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following the talks.

“The President of Russia and the king of Saudi Arabia made an in-depth exchange of views on the most important aspects of the situation in the middle East and North Africa. Special emphasis was made on Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, Lavrov said. – It is absolutely vital that king Salman, and President Putin has shown full understanding of the need for respectful dialogue among all stakeholders to solve these and other problems.”

“They (leaders) emphasized the need to overcoming crises through peaceful, political means on the basis of a broad national dialogue in each specific conflict, on the basis of the UN Charter and principles of international law. In this context, king Salman praised the efforts being made on the Syrian settlement in the framework of the Astana format”, – said the Russian Minister.

Lavrov stressed that Moscow “supports the efforts being undertaken by Saudi Arabia to unite the Syrian opposition in order to secure it on a constructive platform of negotiations with the government on the basis of UN security Council resolution 2254”.

The fight against terrorism

Moscow and Riyadh share a common understanding of the priority of counter-terrorism at the approach to the solution of problems in the middle East, Lavrov said following the meeting.

“When considering all of the problems in the region emerged once again a shared understanding of priority determined fight against terrorism, he said. – The aim of the initiatives and the Russian Federation, and Saudi Arabia are pushing the UN and the whole international arena.”

The settlement of the situation in Syria

Abdul-Aziz al Saud in talks with Putin positively assessed the efforts on the settlement in Syria, undertaken in the framework of the Astana process, said the Russian Minister.

“They (leaders) stressed the need for the soonest overcoming of crisis situations in a peaceful, political means. In this context, king Salman praised the efforts being made on the Syrian settlement in the framework of the Astana format”, – said the Russian foreign Minister.

As Lavrov said that Moscow supports the efforts of Riyadh for the unification of the Syrian opposition for talks with Damascus.

“The Russian side supports the efforts being undertaken by Saudi Arabia to unite the Syrian opposition in order to secure it on a constructive platform of negotiations with the government on the basis of UN security Council resolution 2254” – said Lavrov.
