Russia’s envoy to NATO sees no change in the US approach to the role of the Alliance in the trump

MOSCOW, 8 November. /TASS/. Significant changes in the US approach to the role of the Alliance under President Donald trump did not happen. This was stated by the permanent representative of Russia to NATO Alexander Grushko in an interview to the newspaper “Izvestia” published on Wednesday.

According to him, the United States “as the main “holder” of the Alliance plays first violin in the definition of priorities and areas of activity of NATO.” “To judge the line before the new administration, but significant changes in the US approach to the role of the Alliance did not happen, except, perhaps, the more stringent requirements for Europeans to increase military budgets”, – said the Russian permanent representative.

As the success of the Alliance, continued Grushko, “his history is the history of operations, the consequences of which in the Balkans, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is known”. “And these dark spots will forever remain on the facade of the “most successful” of the Alliance”, – he said.

“Although NATO is a rigid bloc discipline and the organization was trying to speak with one voice, demonstrating the strength of the transatlantic ligaments, it is clear that the members of the Alliance have different priorities and assessment of threats according to their degree of importance”, – said the diplomat.

“The so-called “prifrontovom” are making every effort to return the Alliance to the initial function, come up with the “big enemy”. Others clearly don’t want to slide into a confrontation, they understand that without Russia and especially against Russia’s robust security system to build, – said Grushko. – Southerners (the representatives of the countries – members of NATO in southern Europe) do not hide concerns with the scale of the challenges of the MENA region, with a direct impact on their safety. So trying to find ways to more actively engage in international efforts to combat terrorism and stabilize the MENA region”.
