Matvienko: the first stage of the election campaign was calm and open

SAINT PETERSBURG, 16 February. /TASS/. The first phase of the election campaign in the framework of the presidential elections held openly and strictly within the law. This assessment was expressed to journalists on Friday, the Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.

“Elections are quite competitive. Eight registered candidates, and candidates very ambitious… I Think that this election campaign, its first stage ended, was very quiet, very open. There were no scandals, there were no shocks. It is strictly within the law – we’re also being watched,” – said Matvienko.

The Federation Council speaker noted that the State Duma and the Federation Council made a number of changes to the legislation on presidential elections in order to increase the transparency of the electoral process and increase public confidence in elections. “And in fact, today’s legislation meets all international standards. The first phase took place exclusively within the framework of the legislation,” she said.

Matviyenko also praised the work of the CEC in the framework of the campaign: “I Want to say that CEC works very much, very effectively. You can see all the efforts that they make, and work very openly.”

The Chairman of the upper house of the Parliament expressed hope that the next phase of the campaign before the elections take place “as orderly, transparent manner, strictly within the law”.
