WhatsApp has introduced an age limit for users in the EU


NEW YORK, April 25. /TASS/. The WhatsApp messenger has made adjustments in terms of the provision of services that involve age restrictions for users of the program. Now residents of EU countries can legally use the application only on reaching 16 years of age. This was reported in the official blog of the company.

“Next month, the European Union updates its privacy laws to ensure greater transparency in the processing of the information posted by users on the Internet. WhatsApp updated its “Terms of service and Privacy Policy”, which reflect the law, known as the “General rules on data protection” (GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation), – stated in the message. – If you live in a country of the European region, you must be at least 16 years old to use our service”.

It is noted that people outside the EU can use the messenger from the age of 13, provided it is not contrary to the laws of their country of residence. However, WhatsApp did not specify how to check the real age of the user registered.

General rules on data protection comes into force in the EU in may and grants the community a right to know what data is stored about them on the Internet, as well as the right to demand the removal of this information. In order to use personal data of persons under 16 years of age, companies need the permission of their parents or guardians.
