Putin: Russia expects Syrian opposition to meet obligations under the settlement

QINGDAO, June 10. /TASS/. The Syrian government fulfils its obligations under the settlement in that country and the same steps Russia expects from the opposition. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking on Sunday at the enlarged meeting of the SCO summit.

“Damascus follows the agreements reached at the Congress of the Syrian national dialogue in January in Sochi,” – said Putin. He sent a proposal for the composition of members of the constitutional Committee of the Syrian government to prepare a new basic law of the country,” the President said.

“Thus the government of Syria fully complied with its obligations and expressed its willingness for a political dialogue, now it is opposition”, – said Putin.

Putin noted that Syria has managed to achieve serious progress in the fight against terrorism. “Thanks to the coordinated actions of Russia, the Syrian government, Iran, Turkey, and other partners, including Kazakhstan, have managed largely to suppress terrorist activity in this country,” he said. “Thus the way was open to a political settlement,” – said the Russian President.

Putin reminded that the Syrian authorities control the territory on which lives about 90% of the population.
