The EEC has not abandoned the idea of a common economic space, the EEU and the EU

It is reported that the Chairman of the EEC Board sent the head of the European Commission proposal for a pairing integration between the EEU and the EU.

MOSCOW, 15 Oct. The EEC had sent to the European Commission a letter with a proposal for dialogue on trade and economic cooperation, hopes that in the future this initiative can lead to early discussion of the idea of creating a single economic space between the EEU and the EU, said the press-Secretary Stanislav Zuev, the EEC.

On Thursday, Deputy foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov said that the Chairman of the EEC Board Viktor Khristenko on Tuesday sent the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, a letter with a proposal for pairing integration between the EEU and the EU. Meanwhile, several years ago the Russian leadership has expressed a desire to create a common economic space with the United Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok, but the idea has not found support leaders, and relations between Russia and the EU deteriorated after the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

Zuev has told that Juncker was indeed sent to “aide Memoire”. This is a preliminary letter, not a draft agreement and no legally non-binding document, he explained. “The EEC has a vision that between the EEU and the EU need to establish trade-economic relations without political context. About this they say European investors and companies, they want to understand how regulatory will be arranged”, he said, adding that the EEC considers important dialogue with the EC on trade and economic cooperation for further movement.

“In this regard, on the basis of orders of heads of governments of five countries of the EAEU (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan — ed.) we have sent a note, which says how it could have been. It includes questions on important for trade and economic cooperation sectors, as well as discussion of issues, for example, to reduce trade barriers, harmonisation of customs regulation and other”, — said Zuev.

“And all this from the point of view of the Union is in line with the idea that honey the EEU and the EU in the end can be created a common economic space. However, the current paper does not fix it. It is only the Commission’s initiative for further dialogue,” — said the representative of the EEC.

While the response from the European Commission, the EEC is not received. But if the EC determines that there is a prospect of further cooperation in the future we could arrange to begin negotiations on the expert level, to create a “road map”, according to the ECE. “And on the basis that it will be possible to build a system on which to build the idea of creating a common economic space”, — said Zuev.
