Naryshkin thanked the Swiss parliamentarians for understanding the Russian position on Syria

GENEVA, 20 October. State Duma speaker Sergei Naryshkin thanked the representatives of the Parliament of Switzerland for the understanding of the Russian position on Syria.

“Thank you for understanding of the Russian position regarding the Syrian crisis and understanding of the actions of the Russian Federation on the territory of Syria,” he said at a meeting with Chairman of the National Council of the Swiss Parliament Stefano Rossini.

According to Naryshkin, in a meeting, which he described as “an open and meaningful, representatives of the Russian parliamentary delegation were able to discuss with Swiss colleagues as a wide range of questions of bilateral relations and key themes of the international agenda, including “migration crisis, especially in Europe, as well as the threats associated with criminal activity, the so-called Islamic state (a terrorist group banned in Russia – a comment)”.

The speaker also wished success to the elected to the Swiss Parliament, which formed after the elections on 18 October, and also invited the Swiss parliamentarians on a visit to Moscow. “Take the time, let’s meet in the capital of the Russian Federation”, – he said to Rossini.

For its part, Rossini noted that the meeting with Naryshkin “confirmed its openness to dialogue and cooperation.” According to him, in spite of the political situation in Switzerland, due to the formation of a new Parliament, the agenda of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Russia and Switzerland provides for a range of different activities. “We will continue to work and live in the spirit”, – said the Chairman of the National Council of the Swiss Parliament,” expressing hope that the parliamentary and intergovernmental cooperation between Russia and Switzerland will develop, as well as “economic cooperation (between two countries) in the near future will gather pace”.

The Federation Council on 30 September unanimously approved the request of Russian President Vladimir Putin to use armed forces in Syria against terrorist groups “Islamic state” (IG) and “dzhebhat EN-Nusra”. On the same day of Air and space forces (VKS) Russia began to apply the first pinpoint strikes on militant positions. Since the beginning of operation of Russian aircraft has logged hundreds of combat sorties, destroying dozens of munitions depots, factories for the manufacture of explosives and control points. The Russian authorities have repeatedly stressed that the possibility of a land operation of the Russian armed forces in Syria is completely excluded.
