Zampolpreda RF zagaynov: UN – no alternative mechanism of solving international problems

The UN, on October 24. /Corr. Oleg Zelenin/. The UN is a unique mechanism for solving a variety of problems, the like of which does not exist. This was stated by the Deputy permanent representative of the Russian Federation at the world organization Yevgeny Zagainov said at the session of the General Assembly on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter. He warned that attempts to undermine the credibility of the UN may lead to the collapse of the architecture of international relations.

“The share of the international community over the decades, took many tests, armed conflict, disasters and economic shocks. With all these States it is often difficult to manage alone. Thanks to the United Nations, we have the opportunity to work together to solve various problems. It was not always possible to find the best answer, but it’s important to realize that another mechanism comparable to the UN in its capabilities, we do not have”, – said the Zagainov.

The benchmark for countries

He recalled that in the UN Charter formulates the basic principles of modern world order “have served and continue to serve as guidance to States and the leadership.” “This document is a remarkable achievement of its time, based on ideas of progress and humanism. It represents a Foundation of international legitimacy and justice,” the diplomat added.

He agreed that the UN must conform to “natural evolution” of the world. “We are ready on the basis of a broad consensus to work with all partners towards the further development of the UN, but consider it highly dangerous attempts to undermine its credibility and legitimacy that could lead to the collapse of the modern architecture of international relations. And she literally endured by mankind,” said zagaynov. According to him, if the goal is to ensure the effective working of the UN, “it is necessary to seek common ground, develop shared approaches and to consider each other’s position”.

The General Assembly on Friday adopted a Declaration on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter. 193 member countries of the organization reaffirmed their determination “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” and declared commitment to the principle of non-interference in the internal Affairs of each other.

At the meeting of the HA by a number of States that have expressed support for the work of the UN and expressed their wishes regarding the organization’s reform. So, once again France was in favor of limiting the veto of the permanent members of the Security Council, and Britain – for giving greater transparency to the election process of the Secretary-General, noting that for this post it’s time to nominate a woman. Japan called for expansion of SA, and Israel called for the cancellation of the GA resolution 3379, which equated Zionism to racism.

The international community celebrates the UN Day, dedicated to the entry into force of the Charter of the world organization on 24 October 1945. The document was signed four months before in San Francisco by the delegations of 50 countries, including the USSR, UK, China, USA, Ukraine and France.

The Charter defines the structure of the organization, as well as the basic principles of peaceful conflict resolution and response to acts of aggression, threats to peace and security.

This year on the occasion of the UN Day will be “light show”: more than 200 sites in 60 countries, including the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, will include blue lights in honor of the flag of the United Nations. In Moscow the illuminations will light up almost 50 houses on Novy Arbat, Tverskaya street and Prospekt Mira.

Anniversary amid crisis

Its the 70th anniversary of the UN notes in the period of aggravation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that she is trying to settle with the first years of its existence. However, to fulfill a longtime vision of two States – Israel and Palestine, “living side by side in peace and security”, it is not possible. Moreover, continued settlement activity threatens the Jewish state at all to put an end to achieving this goal, which is constantly warns the UN Secretary-General ban Ki-moon.

Arab countries insist that the acceptance of Palestine in the UN member States will promote the settlement of the conflict. But to verify the correctness of this judgment in practice will fail: U.S. permanent member of the security Council will block any attempt to equalize the status of Palestine and Israel. In addition, Washington remains one of the most influential players in the UN last year when it had considered the draft resolution on the timing of ending the Israeli occupation, the American side did not even have to use its veto – a document has not received the required majority of nine votes.

The impasse in Palestinian-Israeli settlement, the ongoing conflicts in Syria, Libya, Yemen and Ukraine, coupled with the unresolved disputes of Kashmir and Western Sahara are subject to constant criticism by the UN. Of adding fuel to the fire and the impotence of world organizations in promoting nuclear disarmament process, as well as the prevalence of sexual violence by peacekeepers in Africa.

Against this background the United Nations in September adopted a new agenda in global development, which aims at the total elimination of poverty and hunger by 2030.
