KALININGRAD, 22 Dec. The Kaliningrad authorities are planning with the support of the Ministry of transport and Russian Railways to launch to available two additional three marine railway ferry line Baltiysk — Ust-Luga. The head of the region Nikolai Tsukanov said on Tuesday during a message to the regional Duma about the main directions of the government for the next five years.
“I note the unfavourable situation with growth of tariffs for transport by rail through Lithuania and Belarus. I instruct the Ministry of infrastructure development work with the Ministry of transport and Russian Railways, but such work has already begun, the possibility of building three additional sea train ferries, use them on the line Baltiysk — Ust-Luga”, said Tsukanov.
In his words, a permanent increase in tariffs for railway transportation through neighboring countries directly affects the Kaliningrad ports, the cost and competitiveness of local products, highly competitive business. Tsukanov noted that the number of ferries needed to ensure transportation security of the Kaliningrad region with the main territory of Russia common borders.
“That is an agreed position with the Ministry of transport. The transport Ministry is engaged in financial and economic substantiation of construction of these ferries. This is spelled out in the decision of the security Council”, — said the Governor.
Railway-ferry communication between ports Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) — Baltiysk (Kaliningrad region) was opened in December 2003. Currently, the line has two marine railway ferry “Ambal” and “Baltiysk”.
