MOSCOW, February 14. The presidents of Russia and USA Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama during a telephone conversation discussed the Syrian settlement and the situation in Ukraine. According to the press service of the Kremlin.

“Both sides gave a positive assessment of the results of the meeting of the International support group in Syria in Munich on 11 and 12 February, Reaffirming the principles and provisions of the resolutions of the UN Security Council 2254 in terms of the humanitarian aspects and to develop the modalities of the ceasefire and to facilitate the launch of a real political process”, – stated in the message.

Vladimir Putin expressed the hope that Kiev will take practical steps to fulfil its obligations under the “Minsk-2”. “Putin expressed hope that the Kiev authorities will take, finally, practical steps for speedy implementation of its obligations, including the establishment of a direct dialogue with the Donbass, Amnesty and constitutional reform, agreeing with the representatives of Donetsk and Lugansk and the enactment of amendments to the law on the special status”, – stated in the message.

During the conversation the parties, in particular, expressed support for the efforts of two target groups – ceasefire and humanitarian aspects.

THE MINSK AGREEMENT

12 February 2015 the negotiators of the contact group in Minsk signed the previously agreed with the heads of the participating countries “channel four” document, providing for a ceasefire in the Donbass February 15. The negotiations “Norman Quartet” consisting of the presidents of Russia, Ukraine and France, as well as the German Chancellor continued in Minsk in various formats (in the narrow format with participation of members of delegations) from the evening of 11 February, a total of about 16 hours.

On the suppression of terrorism

The President of the Russian Federation of a conversation with Obama also expressed the need of establishing tight working contacts between representatives of the defense Ministry and the U.S. to combat terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG, is prohibited in Russia).

“The Russian President again stressed the importance of creating a United anti-terrorist front, with the rejection of double standards. Both sides stressed the necessity of establishing tight working contacts between representatives of the ministries of defense of Russia and the USA that allow for a systematic and successful fight against the ISIL (the former name “Islamic state” – approx.) and other terrorist organizations,” – stated in the message of the Kremlin.

During the meeting the sides agreed to intensify cooperation through the diplomatic missions and other agencies to implement the Munich statement of the International support group in Syria.

The conversation between the leaders of Russia and the USA “were Frank and business-like,” said the press service of the Kremlin.

“ISLAMIC STATE”

“Islamic state” (ISIS) – an Islamist terrorist organization operating inside Iraq and Syria. Established on 15 October 2006 by the merger of 11 radical Sunni groups. The core group forming the militants, who fought with American troops during their stay in Iraq and with the forces of the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

The IG recognized as a terrorist organization in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Turkey, Egypt, UAE, India, Indonesia, and Russia (29 December 2014).
