U.S. “disappointed” the results of the referendum in the Netherlands on Association of Ukraine with EU


The United States upset the results of the referendum in the Netherlands, the majority of citizens voted against the ratification of the agreement on Association of Ukraine with the EU. This was stated at a briefing the official representative of US state Department mark Toner.

“We are saddened by the outcome of the vote but respect the views of Netherlanders, and political processes in their country,” said Toner (quoted by “Interfax”).

In this case, the Toner stressed that the decision about what to do after the results, should the government of the Netherlands. “This is an internal political issue”, – said the representative of the state Department.

Toner recalled that the U.S. had previously stated that they consider the Association agreement with the EU Ukraine favorable to Washington, Kiev and the EU.

Earlier, the representative of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas said the EC President also upset the results of the referendum in the Netherlands. She also stressed that the referendum will not affect the large-scale EU deal on closer relations with Ukraine, and to analyze the results of the vote is a matter for the government of the Netherlands.

The referendum on the ratification of the Association agreement between Ukraine and EU was held in the Netherlands on the eve of the 6th of April. The final results will be announced on April 12, but, according to preliminary data, compared with 61.1 per cent opposed, 38 per cent. The turnout threshold of 30% has been met, so the referendum was recognized as valid.

In the comments of the government of the Netherlands States that the agreement may not be ratifizierung, “as if nothing happened.” The government has promised that there will be consultation with Parliament, and with European colleagues. On a search for a compromise could take time, said in a statement.
