The President of the European Parliament threatened to impose sanctions against Turkey

The EU should consider sanctions against Turkey in connection with the wave of arrests of opposition figures and journalists after the coup attempt. In an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag said European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

“We in the EU should consider what economic sanctions we can apply against Turkey. By the end of this year must pass a reform of the Customs Union, a member of which is Turkey. I can’t imagine that after a wave of arrests of opposition MPs and journalists we will expand the Customs Union”, — said Schultz.

In addition, the Chairman of the European Parliament reiterated the EU’s position on the issue of the death penalty in Turkey. “If Turkey will return the death penalty, accession negotiations [in the EU] will end,” Schultz explained, and added that he supports the continuation of the dialogue with Turkey.
