Poroshenko announced plans to meet with trump in February

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has expressed hope that will meet with the elected President of the United States Donald trump in February. He said this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal during the world economic forum in Davos.

He said that next month plans to visit Washington. “This [meeting with trump. —] for me it would be a great pleasure, and I think it will be an effective meeting, based on my impression of the conversation [with trump. —] on the phone”, — said Poroshenko.

According to him, the us President-elect expressed “deep involvement” in the events in Ukraine, Poroshenko asked to comment on the situation in the Donbas and Crimea. “We have the support of both parties [of the United States. —], — said the Ukrainian President. I am absolutely convinced that the continuation of our cooperation with the United States will be very effective.”

Poroshenko expressed doubt that sanctions against Russia will be lifted, but said that if the Western partners of Ukraine will weaken the restrictive measures, it will be dangerous for their future security. “Everyone knows that Russia is the aggressor. Everyone knows that it is impossible to remove the sanctions, without betraying thus the European values and European interests. And it would be dangerous not only for Ukraine but for the whole European stability”, — said the Ukrainian President.

Poroshenko told about telephone conversation with trump on November 24 last year. “The issue of Russian aggression, the illegal annexation of Crimea was raised by the elected President of the trump during a conversation with me,” he said, noting that Trump has provided “very detailed information”. Then Poroshenko also drew attention to the fact that “Ukraine has strong bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress,” and expressed the hope that this will continue.
