President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko plans to hold a referendum on the country’s accession to NATO. He stated this in an interview with German newspaper Berliner Morgenpost.
“As President, I will ask the opinion of my people. There will be a referendum on the question of accession [of Ukraine] into NATO. And if Ukrainians will vote for, I will do anything to achieve membership in the Alliance”, — said Poroshenko.
However, he noted that four years ago for joining the Alliance were only 16% of Ukrainians, and now these, according to him, already 54%.
Poroshenko said about the necessity of holding a referendum on the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO in the past. In November 2014 he noted that a plebiscite will be held when Ukraine will meet the requirements of the Alliance.
