The Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov has called a “witch hunt” the situation around the contacts of the Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak with the counselors of the President of the United States Donald trump. About it reports “RIA Novosti”.
“I can’t help but refer to the quote that today issued a media: all this is very similar to a witch hunt — said Lavrov. Ambassadors are appointed for the sake of maintaining relations between States, relations have been maintained in the form of meetings, conversations, contacts”.
Such negotiations may be held with officials of the Executive branch and with members of Parliament, public figures and representatives of non-governmental organizations, the Minister added. According to Lavrov, the practice of such contacts, “no one ever challenged”.
The scandal is reminiscent of the days of McCarthyism, “which, we thought, for a long time in the US as in a civilized country has passed”, added the Minister.
Contacts Ambassador advisors previously reported USA Today. According to the newspaper, these advisors are Jeffrey Gordon and Carter page. The publication claims that they met with Kislyak in the summer of 2016 at a conference in Ohio. The newspaper pointed out that the fact of negotiations casts doubt on the statement of the team trump the absence of contact with representatives of the Russian authorities.
Gordon confirmed that he had a conversation with Kislyak, but stressed that it was “happy hour.” Paige, in turn, refused to disclose details of the conversation with Kislyak and said that nothing “significant” was not discussed.
